New AC Installation: What to Expect on Installation Day and How to Prepare

Replacing your air conditioner is a significant investment — knowing what to expect makes the process much smoother.

A professional AC installation is not a quick job. Done correctly, it involves careful equipment sizing, proper refrigerant handling, electrical work, and thorough testing. Here is a walkthrough of what happens on installation day and how to prepare.

Before Installation Day: The Site Assessment

A reputable HVAC contractor will perform a load calculation (Manual J) before recommending equipment. This determines the correct size system for your home based on square footage, insulation levels, window area, and other factors. Avoid any contractor who quotes a system size without visiting your home — an improperly sized system will underperform regardless of brand or price.

How Long Does AC Installation Take?

A standard central AC replacement (swapping out an existing system with existing ductwork) typically takes 4–8 hours. More complex installations — new ductwork, electrical panel upgrades, or ductless mini-split systems with multiple indoor units — may take 1–2 days.

What Happens During Installation

Step 1: Removing the Old Equipment

Technicians recover the refrigerant from the old system (required by EPA regulations), disconnect electrical connections, and remove the old outdoor condenser unit and indoor air handler or coil. The old equipment is hauled away.

Step 2: Preparing the Installation Site

The outdoor pad is inspected and leveled if needed. Electrical connections are inspected and upgraded if required. The indoor installation area is prepared and protected.

Step 3: Installing the New Equipment

The new outdoor condenser unit is set on the pad and secured. The new indoor air handler or evaporator coil is installed and connected to the ductwork. Refrigerant lines are connected and checked for leaks.

Step 4: Electrical and Refrigerant Work

Electrical connections are made at the disconnect box and air handler. The system is evacuated (a vacuum is pulled on the refrigerant lines to remove air and moisture) and charged with the correct amount of refrigerant.

Step 5: Testing and Commissioning

The system is started and tested. Technicians verify correct airflow, refrigerant pressures, temperature differential across the coil, and thermostat operation. Any adjustments are made before the technicians leave.

How to Prepare Your Home

  • Clear access to the indoor unit: Move any storage, furniture, or items blocking access to the air handler, furnace, or utility closet
  • Clear a path to the outdoor unit: Move vehicles, patio furniture, or anything blocking access to the condenser location
  • Secure pets: Keep pets in a separate room away from the work area
  • Plan for noise: Installation involves drilling, cutting, and equipment noise — plan accordingly if you work from home
  • Be available for questions: The lead technician may have questions about thermostat placement, drain routing, or other decisions

After Installation: What to Watch For

In the first few days after installation, monitor your system for:

  • Proper cooling — the system should reach your set temperature within a reasonable time
  • No unusual noises or odors
  • No water leaks around the indoor unit
  • Consistent airflow from all vents

If anything seems off, call your installer immediately — most issues caught in the first few days are covered under the installation warranty.
