Long Island has a unique mix of housing stock. Older homes in communities like Bay Shore, Patchogue, and Huntington often have boiler systems with cast iron radiators that have been heating families for decades. Newer construction typically uses forced-air furnaces. When it is time to replace a heating system, many homeowners wonder: should I stick with what I have, or switch to something different?

The honest answer is that both systems can work extremely well — but they have meaningful differences in how they heat your home, what they cost to run, and how much maintenance they require. Here is a thorough comparison to help you decide.

How Each System Works

Furnaces: Forced Hot Air

A furnace heats air by burning natural gas (or oil, or using electric resistance) and then distributes that warm air throughout your home via a network of ducts and registers. A blower fan pushes the heated air through the ducts and into each room. Return air vents pull cooler air back to the furnace to be reheated.

Furnaces are the most common heating system in the United States and are standard in most homes built after the 1980s.

Boilers: Radiant Hot Water Heat

A boiler heats water and circulates it through pipes to radiators, baseboard heaters, or in-floor radiant tubing. The heat radiates from these surfaces into the room rather than being blown in by a fan. Most modern boilers use natural gas, though oil boilers are still common on Long Island.

Boiler systems are more common in older Long Island homes and in areas with a strong tradition of radiant heat, like much of the Northeast.

Comfort: How Each System Feels

This is where the two systems differ most noticeably in everyday life.

Boilers provide what many homeowners describe as a more comfortable, even heat. Because the warmth radiates from surfaces rather than being blown in, there are no drafts, no hot and cold spots near vents, and no dry air blowing through the room. The heat feels gentler and more consistent. Many people who grew up with radiator heat find forced air feels harsh by comparison.

Furnaces heat rooms quickly — you feel the warmth almost immediately after the system kicks on. However, forced air can feel drafty near registers, and the constant air movement can stir up dust and allergens. Forced air also tends to dry out indoor air more than radiant heat, which can be uncomfortable during Long Island winters.

Winner for comfort: Boilers, for most people — especially those sensitive to dry air or dust.

Energy Efficiency

Modern high-efficiency versions of both systems can achieve AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) ratings of 95 percent or higher, meaning 95 cents of every dollar spent on fuel goes directly to heating your home.

That said, boilers have a slight edge in real-world efficiency for one key reason: duct losses. Forced-air systems lose 20 to 30 percent of their heated air through leaky or poorly insulated ducts before it ever reaches the living space. Boiler systems have no ducts, so there is no duct loss. If your home has older, leaky ductwork, a boiler system can be significantly more efficient in practice even if the equipment ratings are similar.

Installation Cost

For a straight replacement (same system type), costs are roughly comparable. A new high-efficiency gas furnace installed on Long Island typically runs $3,500 to $6,500 depending on size and complexity. A new gas boiler runs $4,000 to $8,000 for the equipment and installation.

Where costs diverge dramatically is when switching system types. Converting from a boiler to a furnace requires installing an entirely new duct system — a major renovation that can add $5,000 to $15,000 or more to the project. Converting from a furnace to a boiler requires running new piping and installing radiators or baseboard heaters throughout the home, which is similarly expensive.

For most Long Island homeowners, the practical advice is to replace like-for-like unless you have a compelling reason to switch.

Maintenance Requirements

Furnaces require annual tune-ups, regular filter changes (every 1 to 3 months), and occasional duct cleaning. The blower motor, igniter, and heat exchanger are the most common components to need attention over time.

Boilers require annual tune-ups and periodic tasks like bleeding radiators to remove trapped air and checking system pressure. They have fewer moving parts than furnaces, which some homeowners find means fewer repairs over time. However, when boiler repairs are needed, they can be more complex and expensive than furnace repairs.

Winner for maintenance: Roughly equal, though boilers have fewer moving parts.

Air Quality and Allergies

Forced-air furnaces circulate air throughout the home, which means they also circulate dust, pet dander, pollen, and other allergens. A high-quality air filter helps, but it cannot eliminate the issue entirely. Ductwork can also harbor mold, dust mites, and other contaminants if not cleaned periodically.

Boiler systems do not move air at all, which means they do not circulate allergens. For households with allergy or asthma sufferers, this can be a meaningful quality-of-life difference.

Can a Boiler Also Cool My Home?

This is the most common question homeowners with boiler systems ask. The answer is: not directly. Boilers only heat — they cannot provide air conditioning. Homes with boiler systems typically use window air conditioners, ductless mini-split systems, or a separate central AC system for cooling.

Ductless mini-splits are an increasingly popular solution for boiler-heated Long Island homes. They provide efficient cooling (and supplemental heating) without requiring ductwork, and they can be installed room by room as needed.

Which Should You Choose?

For most Long Island homeowners, the decision is straightforward: replace what you have. If you have a boiler, replace it with a new high-efficiency boiler. If you have a furnace, replace it with a new high-efficiency furnace. The cost and disruption of switching systems rarely makes financial sense.

The exception is if your existing system type has caused ongoing problems — for example, if you have a furnace with severely leaky ductwork throughout the home, or if you are doing a major renovation that would make installing a new system type practical.
